The City of Victoria publishes its business licences for 2026. 136 are for hairdressers and barbers. 90 are for esthetics. That is 226 rooms inside the city line alone.
That list leaves out home-based and mobile businesses, so the real number is higher. Statistics Canada counts 245 personal care businesses with staff across Greater Victoria, and 127 of them have one to four people.
The same list holds 34 tattoo and piercing studios and one tanning salon, out of 7,854 licences of every kind. Statistics Canada puts 110 personal care businesses with staff inside the City of Victoria itself, and the rest across Saanich, Oak Bay and the West Shore.
By size, Greater Victoria breaks down like this: 127 rooms with one to four people, 79 with five to nine, 28 with ten to nineteen, and 11 with twenty or more. In Victoria, 52% of them are four people or fewer. Across every trade, Greater Victoria has 15,193 businesses with staff, so about one in 62 is a hair, nail, skin or barber business.
