The City of Nanaimo lets anyone search its business licences. Under personal care it shows 374 open licences. About 255 of them are hair, barber, esthetics, nail, lash, spa or tanning.
Statistics Canada counts 79 personal care businesses with staff in the Nanaimo area. Most rooms here are one person and a chair. Anyone on the mid-island who wants this is not taking a ferry to Vancouver for it.
By size, the Nanaimo area breaks down like this: 28 rooms with one to four people, 34 with five to nine, 10 with ten to nineteen, and 7 with twenty or more. Even in Nanaimo, the small room is the biggest single group. Across every trade, the Nanaimo area has 4,399 businesses with staff, so about one in 56 is a hair, nail, skin or barber business.
The biggest groups are hair stylists and hair salons. Esthetics is next. And one licence in the city lists teeth whitening. One. The service is here and almost nobody is selling it yet.
